75 km from Panama City, Colón is the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. Founded in the 19th century around the Transisthmian railway, the city quickly established itself as a strategic maritime trade hub. Today, it is home to the world's second largest free trade zone. La Romana

Officially founded in 1897, this southern Dominican Republic port town owes its development to the installation of a large sugar cane mill built by Italian immigrants some twenty years later. It was first established in 1851 to facilitate maritime traffic, meaning the port has played a key role in the region's economic development. Boat is docked, no nautical activities are planned.
